A Change in Consumption

by LeJzae Davidson

The excitement of waiting to read the newspaper thats gets thrown in your front yard every morning, going to your local market to pick up your favorite magazines on whats popping in the celebrity world, waiting for your local tv channels to keep you up with political news, to now, having it at the touch of a button. News consumption is a growing topic.

Distinguishing the Change in News Consumption

How do you get your day to day news? The consumption of news  has changed drastically over the years, thanks to new technology and various apps within mass media. We are now able to figure out whats going on in the world, within sports news, global news, entertainment news, economy news, but specifically for this blog, political news, with just one click to the screen.

For so many years, sitting with your head behind a hard copy, paper back news paper was the trend. Mass media such as: cellphones, computers, apple watches, iPads, and many more have made it an easy access. The new trend is downloading news apps directly to your mass media platforms and with the increasing use of mass media for younger generations, this could have a positive impact on young adults awareness in the political world. Because in reality, there is a relatively low reliance millennials use local TV for political news.

What makes this even more interesting? Political figures, such as Donald Trump, uses news apps to his advantage. Recently, this is one of the most common ways he gets his message across. The problem with news apps is determining whether or not the main source is biased or not, popularly known as “fake news.” With that being said, does this new trend have a positive or negative effect on news consumption?

News Through Mass Media

Some of the best news apps(android and iOs) are:

  • Google Play Newsstand
  • Flipboard
  • SmartNews
  • Nuzzle News
  • News Republic
  • Inoreader
  • The Economist
  • News360

  1. I really think this topic is interesting, because for me at least, I used to never know what was going on in the world–I didn’t read the newspaper, or watch the news on TV. But now with news popping up on my phone and the ability to search for something right then and there makes me a little bit more knowledgable of what is going on in the world. In all honesty, technology for me makes it so much more convenient to stay up to date with the happenings in the world. For future posts, it might be interesting to look at how people from our generation have changed the way in which they view the news–is there an increase, decrease or has it stayed the same throughout this change from paper news to news behind a screen?
